Merchant Link TLS Shutdown

by Don Bunt 8. May 2018 12:01

As of today, we are just 53 days from the Merchant Link TLS shutdown. The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard version 3.1 has identified that all versions of SSL and early versions of TLS are vulnerable to attack.

For that reason Merchant Link is shutting down support for SSL v3 and all versions of TLS prior to v1.2. This means that all SMPLink customers will need to upgrade to SMPLink v3. Any site that doesn't upgrade will find that they can no longer process cards after June 30, 2018.

SMPLink™ has been installed in 925 sites and has processed over 300 million transactions since 2010.

Dead Again? Panasonic sunsets the SMP software for the second time

by Don Bunt 30. March 2017 12:36

After spending several years and lots of money bringing the System Manager Pro software back to life, Panasonic has decided to kill it again. I want to start with a little background...

System Manager Pro was first released for the QSR market in 2004 and was discontinued for the first time in 2009.

In 2014, Panasonic hired Bunt Software several years ago to bring SMP back to life and to create SMP 4.0 and OWS 6.0. The software was released in 2016.

Here is a list of the features that we added during the creation of SMP 4.0:

● Added support Windows 7/8/10, both 32 and 64 bit

● Added support for SQL Server Express 2014

● Added support for OWS 6.0

● Removed vulnerable credit card services and replaced it with SMPLink™

● Fixed numerous bugs

Here is a list of the features that we added during the creation of OWS 6.0:

● Added support Windows 7/8/10, both 32 and 64 bit

● Added support for POS Ready 2009, Windows Embedded 7/8

● Added Freedom Pay EMV interface

● Added ability to run off the shelf OPOS drivers

● Added support for several Panasonic tablets including the FZ-R1

● Fixed numerous bugs

When the SMP business didn't pick back up as expected, last year Panasonic went off and bought a Canadian pos software company called Quickservice Technologies along with their iQtouch software. The software is installed in thousands of sites in Canada. I wish Panasonic luck in bringing the software to market in the US.

Now, for all of the SMPLink™ sites that were looking forward to upgrading to SMP 4.0 in order to gain EMV support; you are now out of luck.

We hope that we can offer some comfort in knowing that Bunt Software will continue to support SMP and SMPLink™, just as we have for the past 8 years.

SMPLink™ has been installed in 910 sites and has processed over 200 million transactions since 2010.

SMPLink™ is the ONLY credit interface for the Panasonic System Manager Pro (SMP) pos system.

Top 8 Reasons to Upgrade to SMPLink™ Version 3

by Don Bunt 1. March 2017 07:36

1. Earlier versions of SMPLink™ are no longer PCI compliant. If Merchants don't upgrade, they can no longer truthfully attest to their compliance on their annual PCI Self-Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ). Compliance is mandated by Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express.

2. Merchant Link will stop supporting SSL version 3 and older versions of SMPLink™ will no longer work. As of now, there is no date set yet.

3. Merchants may be fined by their processor for non-compliance.

4. Merchants are held responsible for breaches. In addition to fines, they will be responsible for all of the fraud caused by the breach. It usually means bankruptcy.

5. Point of sale dealers are sometimes held responsible for systems that are out of compliance.

6. If it is an Arbys site, they will need to upgrade to SMPLink™ v3 by April 4 in order to support Vantiv gift cards. This is mandated by Arbys corporate.

7. If the site is using Valutec gift cards, they need to upgrade to SMPLink™ v3 by this fall, otherwise they will be shut off.

8. Upgrading is much cheaper than any other alternative.

To date, only 64 sites have been upgraded, there are still many hundreds of sites to go.

Merchants using older versions SMPLink™ need to move to SMPLink™ version 3.0 as soon as possible to avoid being the target of hacking. Contact your dealer to upgrade today.

SMPLink™ has been installed in 910 sites and has processed over 200 million transactions since 2010.

SMPLink™ is the BEST credit interface for the Panasonic System Manager Pro (SMP) pos system.
