Dead Again? Panasonic sunsets the SMP software for the second time

by Don Bunt 30. March 2017 12:36

After spending several years and lots of money bringing the System Manager Pro software back to life, Panasonic has decided to kill it again. I want to start with a little background...

System Manager Pro was first released for the QSR market in 2004 and was discontinued for the first time in 2009.

In 2014, Panasonic hired Bunt Software several years ago to bring SMP back to life and to create SMP 4.0 and OWS 6.0. The software was released in 2016.

Here is a list of the features that we added during the creation of SMP 4.0:

● Added support Windows 7/8/10, both 32 and 64 bit

● Added support for SQL Server Express 2014

● Added support for OWS 6.0

● Removed vulnerable credit card services and replaced it with SMPLink™

● Fixed numerous bugs

Here is a list of the features that we added during the creation of OWS 6.0:

● Added support Windows 7/8/10, both 32 and 64 bit

● Added support for POS Ready 2009, Windows Embedded 7/8

● Added Freedom Pay EMV interface

● Added ability to run off the shelf OPOS drivers

● Added support for several Panasonic tablets including the FZ-R1

● Fixed numerous bugs

When the SMP business didn't pick back up as expected, last year Panasonic went off and bought a Canadian pos software company called Quickservice Technologies along with their iQtouch software. The software is installed in thousands of sites in Canada. I wish Panasonic luck in bringing the software to market in the US.

Now, for all of the SMPLink™ sites that were looking forward to upgrading to SMP 4.0 in order to gain EMV support; you are now out of luck.

We hope that we can offer some comfort in knowing that Bunt Software will continue to support SMP and SMPLink™, just as we have for the past 8 years.

SMPLink™ has been installed in 910 sites and has processed over 200 million transactions since 2010.

SMPLink™ is the ONLY credit interface for the Panasonic System Manager Pro (SMP) pos system.

Why do we love Panasonic SMP?

by Don Bunt 8. February 2012 07:22

We spend a lot of time pointing out that the Panasonic System Manager Pro software is not PCI compliant. Many might think that we don’t like the software. Actually, along with thousands of restaurant owners, we love the software.

  • SMP has all of the features necessary to run a quick service restaurant.
  • SMP supports the latest touch screen workstations.
  • The Panasonic KVS still has features than all of the other systems don’t have.
  • SMP had the best pricing of any mid-tier point of sale software.

We love the software so much that we have made repeated attempts to purchase or license the source code for SMP from Panasonic. So far, we have been turned down each time.

Bunt Software has made a business out of creating add-ons for and supporting the SMP software. This is not because we are trying to take business away from anyone, but because customers are demanding it from us.

Panasonic likes to call itself a systems business and yet only supplies hardware in the hospitality area. At one time, the combination of hardware and software was a powerful mover for Panasonic.

What do the thousands of restaurant owners want from Panasonic?

Bring back the System Manager Pro software or license the software to someone who can keep it alive.

Bunt Software is the maker of SMPLink™, a PA-DSS validated credit card interface software developed specifically for Panasonic System Manager Pro (SMP) users that integrates seamlessly with Merchant Link's TransactionVault® - a system that stores sensitive cardholder data in a secure vault - not on your back office computer.

SMPLink™ is the ONLY PA-DSS compliant credit interface for the Panasonic System Manager Pro (SMP) pos system.
