Is System Manager Pro PCI compliant? No.

by Don Bunt 3. February 2012 14:46

We recently spoke with a dealer about a restaurant owner who believes that his Panasonic System Manager Pro system is PCI compliant because he uses security products by Vendor Safe Technologies.

Vendor Safe offers network security products including an insurance product called $100k TrustVault™. On their web site, we found a whitepaper entitled “Approved Software Does Not Equate to PCI Compliance”. It tries to stress the point that PCI compliant software ALONE does not make the merchant compliant; but it goes too far. It leads merchants into a false sense of security; thinking that they are so secure that they can safely run non-compliant or vulnerable payment applications. A quick phone call will tell you that the $100k TrustVault™policy will only pay out if you are using a validated payment application.

Is Panasonic System Manager Pro a PA-DSS validated payment application? No

Search on the PCI council website for yourself. Next search for “Bunt Software” or “SMPLink”.

SMPLink™ was PA-DSS validated by Halock Security Labs.

According to a recent study conducted by the Ponemon Institute called "Aftermath of a Data Breach Study", 60 percent of the organizations had not encrypted the data that was breached. SMPLink™ goes one step further, by not storing credit card data on the back office computer at all.

SMPLink™ is credit card interface software developed specifically for Panasonic System Manager Pro (SMP) users that integrates seamlessly with Merchant Link's TransactionVault® - a system that stores sensitive cardholder data in a secure vault - not on your back office computer.

Bunt Software has over 500 SMPLink™ sites installed with another 75 in the process of being installed. SMPLink™ processes 50,000 credit transactions per day and has processed over 18 million credit transactions to date.

SMPLink™ is the ONLY PA-DSS compliant credit interface for the Panasonic System Manager Pro (SMP) pos system.

Panasonic SMP / ProtoBase users have a PCI compliant solution too!

When Panasonic System Manager Pro was originally purchased, users had a choice of their payment card middleware. They could either use Merchant Link's hosted payment gateway or they could use Southern DataComm's ProtoBase software. Southern DataComm is now called Elavon.

Last year, Elavon stopped installing protobase with SMP because of PCI compliance concerns. They also started limiting support to existing customers. Normally, these merchants would need to replace their pos system when credit processing in a PCI compliant manner is no longer available.

After Panasonic discontinued support for SMP, Bunt Software created SMPLink™ to ensure that the 3500 users of SMP would continue to have a PCI compliant solution. SMPLink™ is middleware that replaces the standard credit services in SMP, including ProtoBase. When switching from ProtoBase to SMPLink™, all of the same processors and gift cards are available.

There are an esitmated 500 merchants still running Protobase with Panasonic SMP. We believe that each of these sites is vulnerable. We are so concerned about this that we are offering a discount for the SMPLink™ software thru the end of January, 2012. Merchants: see your pos dealer for details.

SMPLink™ integrates seamlessly with Merchant Link's TransactionVault® - a tokenization system that stores sensitive cardholder data in a secure vault - not on your back office computer.

Over 14.5 million transactions have been processed by SMPLink™ worth an estimated $108 million dollars. We continue to add over 1.8 million transactions per month.

SMPLink™ is the ONLY PA-DSS compliant credit interface for the Panasonic System Manager Pro (SMP) pos system.

Today, we passed the 10 million transaction mark!

SMPLink™ v2 is no longer PCI compliant, Version 3 is now available!

Due to vulnerabilities found in SSL v3, including the POODLE vulnerability. Merchants using SMPLink™ v2 and below need to move to SMPLink™ v3 as soon as possible to avoid being the target of hacking.
