Who will enforce the credit card rules?

by Don Bunt 24. July 2013 09:58

Eighteen months ago, Visa notified credit card processors that the Panasonic System Manager Pro (SMP) software was vulnerable. Most major quick service restaurant brands are represented in the 200+ vulnerable sites still processing credit transactions with this software.

Instead of forcing the vulnerable sites off the software, many of the processors have instituted PCI non-compliance fees. Eighteen months later, credit card processors continue to process transactions from these vulnerable sites.

“VNPs and agents must decertify all vulnerable payment applications.” When Diana Greenhaw, Global Payment System Risk at Visa was asked about this mandate, she stated that it "requires acquirers to discontinue boarding new merchants using known vulnerable applications and develop plans for transitioning existing merchants to different applications." Eighteen months later, Visa continues to allow transactions from these vulnerable sites.

Merchant Link has sent many notifications to both the processors and sites. They have conducted multiple webinars and conference calls to educate the affected Panasonic SMP sites.  Despite these efforts, their position is as follows: “Ultimately it is the banks’ responsibility to ensure that vulnerable applications are not supported on their systems” according to Dan Lane, Merchant Link’s President, “and we will work with them to support those efforts.” Eighteen months later, Merchant Link continues to process transactions from these vulnerable sites.

Elavon ended support for protobase with SMP several years ago, but there are still 100+ sites using this software albeit without support.

The PCI Council states that they only create the rules and do not enforce them.

Quick service restaurant brands are equally guilty of not forcing their franchisees to stop using the SMP software. One of the top five QSR brands represents over half of the vulnerable sites. Even though the parent company was notified, eighteen months later, they continue to allow transactions from these vulnerable sites.

Who will enforce the credit card rules? No One!

The ultimate responsibility for remaining PCI compliant lies with the Merchant.

So what happens if these sites continue to process with vulnerable applications? Nothing ... until they are breached.

1. They will pay large fines

2. Their restaurant brand reputation will suffer

3. They may lose their franchise

4. They may lose their ability to accept credit cards

Bunt Software to add Skype™ calling capability to Panasonic Attune® Drive-Thru Communications System

by Don Bunt 15. July 2013 14:33

In cooperation with Panasonic, Bunt Software is pleased to announce the development of AttuneIn. AttuneIn is a pc-based software that provides free internet-based calling into and out of the Attune system.

AttuneIn supports telephone mode where calls can be placed to the manager headset. Telephone mode duplicates the functionality of the Panasonic Telephone Interface box with a pc-based free calling solution. It also supports broadcast mode where calls can be placed to the manager headset, all headsets, outside speaker or the aux speaker. AttuneIn can also place outbound Skype calls initiated from a headset.

Using a secondary sound card and simple wiring, AttuneIn runs on existing back office computers over existing internet connections.

The AttuneIn solution can be used for corporate offices to call into their sites or to host support calls to dealers and vendors without using traditional telephones. It will also be popular in hospital settings where calls between operating rooms and pharmacies are necessary.

AttuneIn supports the current generation of Attune systems as well as future Panasonic Drive-Thru Communications Systems.

AttuneIn will be available for sale in the next thirty to sixty days through the Bunt Software dealer networks.

Why use SMPLink instead of standalone credit card terminals?

by Don Bunt 10. May 2013 07:32

Quick service restaurant operators who use the System Manager Pro point of sale system have a choice between using integrated credit processing and standalone terminals. Integrated credit allows the credit card to be swiped directly on the pos workstation. Using SMPLink™ is the only PCI compliant way to process integrated credit transactions on an SMP system.

Standalone credit card terminals

Using standalone credit card terminals seems like the simple way to process credit transactions, however, they have serious disadvantages.

Reentry errors

The sale gets entered on the pos workstation, and then the total of the sale gets reentered on the standalone terminal. The reentry of data is prone to having errors.

Multiple receipts

The sale will have two receipts, one from the pos system and another from the credit terminal.

Slow speed of service

The reentry of totals into the standalone terminal adds 20 seconds or more to each transaction causing poor speed of service.

Fraud potential

Because the terminal requires no sale on the pos system, anyone can enter a fraudulent credit transaction at any time.

Unprofessional appearance

Lastly, the terminal takes space on your front counter and it looks unprofessional.

Integrated Credit with SMPLink

Integrated credit using SMPLink has many advantages over standalone units.

Single entry of data

The transaction is entered and card swiped directly on the pos workstation.

Fast speed of service

Most transactions are authorized in under a second.

Internet plus dial backup

Transactions are authorized thru the internet. If your internet goes down, SMPLink will revert to dialup.

Only one receipt

Transaction details as well as credit payment information all go on one receipt.

PCI compliant

With SMPLink and Transaction Vault, sensitive card information is never stored.

Easy reconciliation

Credit reports and balancing information is stored on the pos system.

Low cost to implement

In most cases, with multiple pos workstations in the restaurant, SMPLink is cheaper to implement than standalone terminals.

It works!

SMPLink™ has over 800 sites installed and has processed over 58 million transactions.

Find SMPLink™ on the PCI Council List of Validated Payment Applications: search for Application="SMPLink" or Company="Bunt Software".

SMPLink™ is the ONLY PA-DSS compliant credit interface for the Panasonic System Manager Pro (SMP) pos system.

SMPLink™ v2 is no longer PCI compliant, Version 3 is now available!

Due to vulnerabilities found in SSL v3, including the POODLE vulnerability. Merchants using SMPLink™ v2 and below need to move to SMPLink™ v3 as soon as possible to avoid being the target of hacking.
